Second Line Memorial Walking Parade

Second Line Memorial Walking Parade

September 1, 2024
5:00 PM
to
6:00 PM

100 Block of Duval

FREE

The parade on Sunday, September 1 is a traditional walking Second Line memorial processional and you're invited to participate in one of these ways:

1. Walk with us. Wear your best tropical attire, grab a beverage and be a part of the memorial walk. Carry your homemade sign or walk your decorated bike. Open and inclusive to everyone who has a soft spot for Key West's favorite son. (1B. If you play an instrument or in a musical group, please reach out through messenger. Let's talk!)

2. Watch along Duval or Southard Street. Gather on the sidelines and cheer us on. We'll be stopping periodically to sing so hopefully you'll sing along and reflect.

3. Watch virtually from your home or watch party. Get some friends together and project it to the big screen in your backyard, your favorite bar or comfort of your living room.

We've made fun, laminated 'parade passes' available for $30 through the website. These will be mailed regular postal service first of August. All proceeds are collected by the Community Foundation of the Florida Keys and distributed 100% to the Bahamas Village Music Program and Reef Relief. Be clear, this is not a ticket. It is a contribution. The Second Line is completely free. But your pass does get a few benefits locally and also the opportunity to participate virtually if you can't make to Key West this year. Your support means the world to these charities & you get a cool first edition souvenir.

Gather round in the lower 100 block of Duval Street starting at 4 pm. The Second Line will step off promptly at 5 ⏰ (of course 🌞). The route is 5 blocks down Duval, right on Southard approximately 5 blocks to the Truman Waterfront where we have a small celebration planned. Bring plenty of water in refillable bottles and help us keep this one of the cleanest parades on the planet!

You may leave the parade route at any point but we hope you'll want to join us at the Waterfront Park. The free Duval Loop picks up there. You may also decorate and walk your bike (for our visitors we recommend rentals at Eaton Bikes) and lock it up at the park to ride home later. There will be very limited car parking - you could even stage a car - but don't forget to pay the meter. Also rideshare and taxis are plentiful and quickly available.

According to the NY times, "The second line is a type of parade historically associated with jazz funerals; the term "second line" is often thought originally to have referred to the secondary group of participants in such a parade, behind the band and the family." You'll see these in places like New Orleans, the Caribbean and in Key West. It's a fitting memorial involving music and friendship to celebrate Key West's favorite son. We hope you'll join us.
